Plotwright
The plan and the prose, in one place

Plotwright is a writing app for novelists, screenwriters and playwrights. Your books sit on a bookshelf, the plan of each story sits on a board, and every scene card opens straight onto its prose. Move a card and the book follows.
In testing. Windows first; price and release date to come.
Plan it on a board
- Scenes as cards on a beat sheet: nine to choose from, or columns of your own. Scenes you haven’t placed wait on the side.
- Each scene’s goal, obstacle and conflict shown above the page while you draft, and never saved into the text.
- A tension curve, a timeline, a map of your plotlines, plant-and-payoff threads and a free canvas.
- A cast with its relationships, and a series bible that every book in the series inherits.
- Snapshots of every scene, compared word by word, restored when you want them back.
Write without distractions
- A page that looks like a book, with controls that fade until you need them.
- Enter twice for a scene break, three times for a new chapter.
- A Darlings tab that keeps the passages you cut, ready to go back where they came from.
- Placeholders for the name or fact you’ll look up later, and daily word goals.
Scripts and plays
- Screenplays written in Fountain and formatted as you type: scene headings, cues, parentheticals and transitions.
- Stage plays in UK and Australian or US layout.
- Final Draft files in and out, and print-ready PDFs of both.
Bring your work in, send it out
- Import from Scrivener, Plottr, yWriter, Final Draft, Word, EPUB, PDF, RTF and Markdown outlines.
- Compile to an EPUB built to KDP’s guidelines, a print PDF at KDP trim sizes, Word, and a review PDF with every line numbered.
- For non-fiction, citations checked against your bibliography (formatted through Pandoc or Quarto, which you install separately).
AI only if you want it
AI is off until you turn it on, book by book. When it’s on, Plotwright can answer questions about your book, check the structure of your board and suggest details for a scene. It works through Claude Code or an AI provider you choose, logs every call with its cost, and changes nothing in your book until you accept it.
Your files stay yours
Everything is plain files on your own computer: scenes in Markdown, the board in JSON. No account, and nothing leaves your computer unless you send it to an AI provider yourself.
Plotwright is built on NEO, the open-source writing app by Hugh Howey (MIT licence). Claude is a trade mark of Anthropic; Final Draft, Scrivener and Plottr belong to their owners.
