Privacy policy
Last updated: 13 Oct 2026
Backmatter Press is an independent publisher based in Victoria, Australia. This policy explains what happens to your details when you visit this website or join the Backmatter Press email list. The short version: I collect only what I need to send you the emails you asked for, I never sell or rent your details, and you can leave at any time with one click.
What I collect
When you sign up, I collect your email address and, if you give it, your first name.
My email service, Kit, also records some information automatically: the date you signed up and which form you used; your approximate location (country or region), worked out from your internet connection; and whether you open my emails and which links you click.
This website
This website is hosted by Netlify (netlify.com). Like any web host, Netlify records basic technical details of each visit, such as your IP address and browser, to deliver the site and keep it secure. The site itself sets no cookies and runs no analytics or advertising trackers. Downloading the free Protocol needs no sign-up. Beyond Netlify’s standard record of the visit, it collects nothing.
Why I collect it
I use your details to send you the emails you signed up for: my newsletter about writing (fiction and non-fiction) and AI tools, plus news about my books. I also use them to understand which emails are useful, so I can write better ones. I won’t use your details for anything else.
If you’re in the EU, the UK or Switzerland, I rely on your consent to email you. Kit will ask you to confirm that consent after you sign up.
Who else handles your details
I don’t sell, rent or trade your details. Three services handle them on my behalf:
- Kit (kit.com), my email platform, which stores the list and sends the emails. Kit is based in the United States, so your details are stored there. Kit’s own privacy policy.
- Netlify (netlify.com), which hosts this website, as above. Netlify is based in the United States.
- Google (Gmail), which receives any email you send to hello@backmatterpress.com. Google may store messages outside Australia.
I may disclose your details if the law requires it.
How long I keep it
I keep your details for as long as you stay subscribed. If you unsubscribe, I stop emailing you straight away. Kit keeps a minimal record that you unsubscribed, so you aren’t accidentally added back.
Your choices and rights
Unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of every email. It takes effect immediately.
See, correct or delete the details I hold about you by emailing hello@backmatterpress.com. I’ll respond within 30 days.
Complain: if you’re unhappy with how I’ve handled your details, email me first. If that doesn’t resolve it, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au). If you’re in the EU, the UK or Switzerland, you can contact your local data protection authority.
Cookies
This website sets no cookies. Kit’s sign-up pages may use cookies to make the form work and to measure how the page performs. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings.
Children
This list is not intended for anyone under 16.
Changes
If I change this policy, I’ll update the date at the top. If a change is significant, I’ll tell subscribers by email.
